Forestry & Woodland Surveying
We can provide Forestry/Woodland surveys for you. Minimum charge tends to be around £250 for a site visit, and report. These types of surveys are carried out for management purposes. They are mostly used in timber producing operations to:
The methods used are standardised & accountable. The measurement of trees & timber in all forestry situations in the UK are those described in Forestry Commission Booklet 39 Forest mensuration. Considerable experience is needed to choose the correct protocol for a given situation. Booklet 39 starts too far down the road for amenity governed woodlands, but it is essential when any sort of production felling operation is undertaken.
Timber varies in value with age (which mostly relates to optimal size). High value timber demands the most accurate methods of measurement, at the top of this list:
Whitelands based services
The site is used by many organisations and parties. We are on the BBC locations register, we provide practice facilities for historical re-enactors. Our strongest work of this nature, and one we wish to increase is the use by parties of students for various studies.
Tree surveying & measurement
We can provide a tree measurement service for you. Minimum charge tends to be about £250 for a site visit and report. We have provided them for Maintenance, Monitoring, Safety, Insurance, Development, and Litigation, all to do with trees in an arboricultural situation.
Typically, we use the British Standard 5837: 1991 Trees in relation to construction. This is an adequate method whose greatest asset is its standardisation. With site-specific descriptions, and by making it relative, most requirements for description can be accomplished. It is used and understood by all professionals in the Arboriculture Industry.
Our scientific surveys of necessity move away from BS 5837, toward using ecological, and botanical descriptions with microscopic and in vitro methods. We can also carry out Habitat surveys to Phase I & II standards.
Timber, underwood, foliage and plant supplies
We sell HGV1 loads of timber for prices starting at about £1000, this works out at about £40 per tonne. With warning we can source any standing British Grown timbers, arrange for their felling under licence, and deliver to an agreed location.
Our timber is used for many purposes. In terms of value, the lowest commodity on the scale is firewood. Moving up through the grades, next come fencing commodities of small diameter, to dimensions and specifications for construction, and framing purposes.
Accuracy & cost
The greater the accuracy, the greater the cost. But how accurate does it need to be? Volume estimates should always be qualified, and even slightly weighted to yield low. This gives a “buffering” capacity, (For instance, by not counting small stems below a defined diameter) but must not be too great or the owner will lose out. It is the assessors responsibility to interpret, and control how contractors will operate.
Be aware that timber can be measured Standing, Felled, Solid volume, Stacked volume, Green weight, Dry weight, Length, Number of pieces, Overbark, Underbark, Top diameter, Taper.
Product value/volume
Timber operations resulting in less than an HGV 1 load are not worth assessment cost, unless other factors in this list override this first principle. The legal baseline is that if more than 5 m3 of timber are felled, then a Felling Licence must be obtained.( Forestry Act 1967 Part III).
