Tree measurement for the projects listed above is arboricultural in nature. Silviculture has no place in these circumstances, even if it has been the governing factor before development is undertaken. Development work is a fundamental change of use imposed when planning permission is granted, and ends stand management.
For larger development schemes, a tree survey & tree management implications are always required. You should pre-empt any challenge from the planning committees by presenting a good survey at the start. Apply sound arboricultural principles to “achieve a satisfactory juxtaposition of trees, shrubs, hedges & structures” With good survey techniques, and presentation, tree management can be lifted beyond the “satisfactory” to the creditable, and achieve “planning gain.”
Tree surveying & measurement
We can provide a tree measurement service for you. Minimum charge tends to be about £250 for a site visit and report. We have provided them for Maintenance, Monitoring, Safety, Insurance, Development, and Litigation, all to do with trees in an arboricultural situation.
Typically, we use the British Standard 5837: 1991 Trees in relation to construction. This is an adequate method whose greatest asset is its standardisation. With site-specific descriptions, and by making it relative, most requirements for description can be accomplished. It is used and understood by all professionals in the Arboriculture Industry.
Our scientific surveys of necessity move away from BS 5837, toward using ecological, and botanical descriptions with microscopic and in vitro methods. We can also carry out Habitat surveys to Phase I & II standards.
